Ramblings 2011: Some musings on my own practice

In my work I am interested in exploring the strange and the unexpected. I love images when they disrupt the viewer, where some detail put the image beyond the expected and stops you momentarily in your tracks. I love strangeness of situation or character, something beyond our usual experiences that awakens an interest and a desire to know more. I love the un-noticed and the illogical, those strange aspects of life, which perhaps we take for granted, never questioning the inherent strangeness. I think that there should also be an element of humour in photography to counteract the risk of taking ones self too seriously.

Photography is about what is interesting. It is about finding out about things, places and situations, which you might otherwise never explore or understand. It is about putting yourself into new situations and creating new experiences. It is about meeting new people and engaging in conversations. Photography is a conversation about what is interesting.

I like working with film not because of a superiority of quality but because of its effect on the process of making a photograph. The need to be slower and more considered, to allow time for the experience rather than just to make the image. Access and experience are as much an important part of my practice as the resulting images.
